Why did you put a 160 mph speedometer...i n this
Not only is it hilariously ambitious. Not only is it hopeless out of place on their flagship fwd luxury sedan (in 2006). Not only is pointless (top speed is limited to 146). Not only does it make normal speeds difficult to judge because all the useable range is only half the needle and the graduations for a 160 mph speed mean 5 mpg increments only. BUT IT’ S PARTIALLY OBSCURED BY YOUR COWL!
Hyundai has come a LONG way in 14 model years.
This particular one Im driving has 102,000 miles on it, the st eer ing column clanks lightly , there is a noise in the front suspension that sounds like bad ball joints, there is a flutter somewhere, it pulls a little to the right always. The owner has taken amazing care of it, and has had it in the shop a lot for the suspension steering and other noises. It was in the shop for a month recently because it needed a Hyundai tech and a new computer to be flown in to fix it . Its immaculate inside and out.
but
Drives well in the snow. The 3.8 is torquey. the 5 speed does all the things a manumatic should do: holds gears no matter what. Whatever gear you tell it to be in (that the computer will allow...i.e. no first gear highway drops or 4th gear starts) it will stay there...hap pily bouncing of the rev limiter all day and never downshifting even at stall speeds.

I never got why an average road car needs a speedometer that goes past 100. That covers all your road speeds and if you are going past 100 you don’t need to know exactly how fast you are going.

I genuinely like the new sonata. I’ve had it several times as a rental and it’s a good car.

yup. Even on a fast car I’d rather have higher resolution where I spend 99% of my driving versus the 1%. And then just make a digital speed readout as part of the display.
The land cruiser has this
which is very optimistic indeed. This vehicle actually has a listed maximum continuous operating speed (140 kph) I’ve seen triple digits just one terrifying time.

Feast your eyes on the facelifted 1st-gen Vibe speedometer. The car lives at speeds that span only one third of the circumference (were it a full circle), and 60 mph is at 10oclock, AND I’m pretty sure it’s not capable of speeds over 91mph with a 1ZZ mated to a slushbox. Not that I’ve tried mind you, but I know a guy who has...

Thats pretty bad. The Azera 100 mph mark isn’t even at 12 oclock. the owner of an Azera would never see the needle sweep to the right at all.

Did you test that theory? :)

I ought to...but not today in the snow with bald tires.

On new GM trucks, the steering wheel only goes high enough for me to obscure the gauges.

My civic has an analog tach and a digital speedo. It's always in whatever range I need it to be. Great layout.

The speedometer in my 157hp Mazda5 also goes up to 160 MPH, and yeah, that’s probably a tad optimistic. The metric speedo only goes up to 240 km/h, which is probably more realistic (although judging by that redline it’s probably a Diesel)

Even in my old E46, whose speedometer also went to 160, I only a handful of times got in the 100+ range, and only once did we test the limiter of 128mph. And that took a LONG TIME to get up to 128, I think there was a hill involved, too.

My wife’s 2017 Sonata Sport (2.4L, Auto) has the 160 speedo. Seems a bit much. But the car has 70K on the ticker so far, it’s a truly great car for it’s intended purpose: commuting 30 miles a day, and road trips. I love driving this car on road trips. From Phoenix to San Diego, I average close to 90mph and the car just eats up the road. I know that at 100, we’re only at 2700 rpm, so she’s got more juice to give if we want it... and we average 35mpg on these trips. It’s a comfortable, reliable, Korean Camry that went out the dealership doors with 8 miles on the ticker for $22K. Tough to beat that. I happen to really like the styling, the interior is well aid out, and the tech all works flawlessly. Once the Son and Heir is off our payroll, we will definitely be looking at a Genesis though...

My Dodge really only needs up to 70mph. Past that should be a red zone indicating risk of death.
